Quick Look: Roulette Dice 3.0 – The Final Roulette Upgrade
Publisher: MinZerTRPG®
Year Published: Currently on Kickstarter for 2 more weeks at posting (link at bottom of review!!)
Traditional dice are small and leave little room for creativity. Roulette Dice 3 breaks free from these constraints, offering more patterns, styles, and personal expression while still ensuring true randomness.
Review:
I love the possibility of gaming on the go, being able to potentially engage in almost any RPG on short notice, but I do realize that there is such a thing as a personal low for me that I would never dare to stoop down to ; Namely walking around with dice in my pocket…
And I generally don’t like using dice apps either, as that feels too modern or “digital”, and that ruins the tactile thrill and sensation of physically engaging with your choice of medium.
Thankfully, a solution to this dilemma now exists.
A relatively new (to my vantage, at least) product known as Roulette Dice have been making their rounds on KS, bringing newfound mechanical modernization to the old fashioned medium of dice. The team behind this device was kind enough to send me one of these contraptions to review, and now that it is in my hands, it is now, as Matrim Cauthon would say…
“Dovie’ andi se tovya sagain!”
(It is time to roll the dice!)
The Roulette Dice are 6 sets of spinning discs mechanically joined into one device that serves seven functions in randomization : D4, D6, D8 D10, D12, D20 and (through also using the D10 as a percentile die) D100. The metal cast body features a top-mounted button that starts the spinning of all the discs , which lasts until you release the button, at which point, the discs all lock into place depicting their respective value depending on the slot(s) you need to derive results from.
The video I am posting here does more justice than my words, so take a gander.
It also came with a nice black cardboard for storage.
First and foremost, let me say that my impressions are based on a prototype, so the final product may differ from what I have received.
But, wow, oh wow, what a promising little delight this is to behold!
Now I was warned in advance that the prototype units may make some mechanical noise when starting and stopping with the button, but for me this is a non-issue, and indeed part of the device’s charm. In fact, whatever “noise” there might be, it seems very minimal to my ear. And although some might bemoan this aspect (if it does indeed exist), I find it extremely fitting, feeling almost steampunk in nature.
Results all locked into place clearly, legibly, and without confusion in my experience. While in theory and practice I have seen some devices that left users with ambiguous results due to meters being centered between two separate numbers, this simply never happened with the Roulette Dice for me.
Moreover, the unit feels like a nostalgic carryover of the 80’s for me. While bearing no formal affiliation with the brand, walking around with the Roulette Dice evoked the feeling of me carrying around one of my favorite relics of my childhood : Flipsiders!
In addition, numerous design choices are available ; if you prefer to be a Druid, they have a thematically appropriate design, just as they do for a Paladin…
But perhaps the best thing I can say about the Roulette Dice is that they cosmetically sport all the flashiness and sophistication of a fancy pocket watch, but without the stigma of excessive geekiness. And such a thing does exist in my eyes, as I have encountered several other “new” products recently that I would equally avoid carrying around with me in public!
The bottom line is that I think Roulette Dice are an extremely fun and fashionable alternative to bringing a full set of DnD dice everywhere you go. They get my highest recommendation!
